Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival: What Are Its Origins?
Like many things in the Bahamas, the exact origins of the Bahamas Junkanoo Festival are a bit of a mystery. In fact, there are several theories floating around:
- John Canoe, a West African prince who outwitted the English, started the festival in the 18th century
- The festival evolved from slavery, as African slaves were given 3 days off around Christmas, which they used to dance and celebrate
Likewise, the origins of the name “Junkanoo” are also unclear. Some believe:
- It comes from the name “John Canoe”
- It comes from the French word l’inconnu, meaning the unknown (a reference to the masks worn by participants)
- It originates from Scottish settlers’ references to the parade, junk enoo, meaning junk enough
Regardless of the exact origins of the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival, it remains an exciting event that much of the country participates in nonetheless.
When Can You Celebrate?
Traditionally, the festival took place the day after Christmas on Boxing Day and the morning of New Year’s Day.
